Thousands Take to the Streets to Send Clear Message to UN: End the Debt Crisis, Tax the Rich, Fund the Future
Protesters filled Seville’s historic streets as global finance leaders gathered for key UN talks

Seville, Spain — On Sunday, June 29, 025 thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Seville to demand urgent action on debt cancellation, fair global taxation, and the dismantling of financial systems that perpetuate inequality. The march coincided with the opening days of the United Nations’ Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4).

Starting at the Jardines de Cristina, the march moved through the city’s historic center in a powerful display of solidarity, with colorful banners, music, and street art amplifying the message: End financial colonialism. Make Polluters Pay. Dignidad, no deuda. Tax the Super Rich. Let the Global South breathe. UN Tax Convention Now!
Activists from over 50 countries joined the action, representing debt justice movements, tax equity coalitions, youth groups, and faith-based networks.
This was part of a global mobilization, with marches in 41 countries and in 149 cities, towns, and districts from June 27th to June 29th. The global actions are calling for a transformation of the international financial system ahead of the once-in-a-decade UN finance summit.
“El compromiso de Sevilla” is a text that has left many pending issues, such as debt, gender and structural integration of climate and nature in the development agenda; however governments have the opportunity to leave Sevilla with strong and renovated political commitments and alliances to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable development, even in the absence of the US on board. Here the money is not scarce, is the political will the one in scarcity" said Sandra Guzmán, Director General for Climate Finance Group for Latin America and the Caribbean (GFLAC).
FFD4 has drawn criticism for limited engagement from powerful economies like the United States. But civil society groups used the march to show that the rest of the world is moving forward with demands for a fairer, people-centered global finance system.
“Public grants based finance is essential to deliver climate and development action, decisions should be made based on the needs of communities and not profits,” said Mariana Paoli, Global Advocacy Lead, Christian Aid. “Rich countries must pay their climate debt to the global south, providing their fair share of money, it is about justice, equity and reparations. There is no lack of money, it is a matter of political will, the increased military spending is proof of that.
Developed countries continue to block the changes needed to deliver climate and economic justice. In the face of a mounting global debt crisis, climate breakdown and gaping global inequalities, it is time to transform the global system that is driving these crises. Democratising economic decision making and enabling the global south to have more voice and participation is essential to meet the needs of the poorest and affected communities”.
“We came to Seville to say: enough is enough,” said Andrew Nazdin of the Glasgow Actions Team. “We need debt relief, a UN tax convention, and global economic rules that build for the many to thrive, not the few.”
“In the words of one great member of the African diaspora, modernity has made the world a neighborhood, but not yet a brotherhood," said Iskander Erzini Vernoit, Director of the IMAL Initiative for Climate & Development.
The Vatican’s advocacy arm bolstered these messages with a live mural installed in the heart of Seville calling for a solution to debt injustice.
Campaigners are demanding urgent steps to dismantle illegitimate debt burdens, establish a UN-based framework for debt resolution, and stop the influence of powerful nations and institutions that continue to impose economic domination over the Global South.

Sevilla, España — El domingo 29 de junio, miles de manifestantes marcharon por las calles de Sevilla para exigir acción urgente sobre la cancelación de la deuda, una fiscalidad global justa y el desmantelamiento de los sistemas financieros que perpetúan la desigualdad. La marcha coincidió con los días de apertura de la Cuarta Conferencia Internacional sobre Financiación para el Desarrollo (FFD4) de las Naciones Unidas.

Partiendo desde los Jardines de Cristina, la manifestación recorrió el centro histórico de la ciudad en una potente demostración de solidaridad, con pancartas vibrantes, música y arte urbano que amplificaban el mensaje: Fin al colonialismo financiero. Que paguen los contaminadores. Dignidad, no deuda. Impuestos a los súper ricos. Que respire el Sur Global. ¡Convención Fiscal de la ONU ahora!
Activistas de más de 50 países participaron en la acción, en representación de movimientos por la justicia de la deuda, coaliciones por la equidad fiscal, organizaciones juveniles y redes de base religiosa.
La manifestación se enmarcó en una movilización mundial, con marchas en 41 países y 149 ciudades, pueblos y municipios entre el 27 y el 29 de junio. Las acciones globales exigen una transformación del sistema financiero internacional de cara a la cumbre financiera de la ONU que tiene lugar una vez cada diez años.
"El Compromiso de Sevilla" es un texto que ha dejado muchas cuestiones pendientes, como la deuda, el género y la integración estructural del clima y la naturaleza en la agenda de desarrollo; sin embargo, los gobiernos tienen la oportunidad de marcharse de Sevilla con compromisos políticos y alianzas fuertes y renovadas para acelerar la transición hacia un desarrollo sostenible, incluso sin la participación de Estados Unidos. Aquí no falta el dinero, sino que escasea la voluntad política”, dijo Sandra Guzmán, Directora General del Grupo de Financiamiento Climático para América Latina y el Caribe (GFLAC).
FFD4 ha recibido críticas por la limitada participación de economías poderosas como Estados Unidos. Pero los grupos de la sociedad civil utilizaron la marcha para demostrar que el resto del mundo avanza con demandas de un sistema financiero global más justo y centrado en las personas.
"La financiación basada en subvenciones públicas es esencial para implementar acciones climáticas y de desarrollo, las decisiones deberían tomarse basándose en las necesidades de las comunidades y no en los beneficios", dijo Mariana Paoli, Líder Global de Advocacy de Christian Aid. "Los países ricos deben pagar su deuda climática al sur global, proporcionando su parte justa de dinero, se trata de justicia, equidad y reparaciones. No hay falta de dinero, es una cuestión de voluntad política, el aumento del gasto militar es prueba de ello.
Los países desarrollados continúan bloqueando los cambios necesarios para entregar justicia climática y económica. Ante una crisis de deuda global creciente, colapso climático y desigualdades globales enormes, es hora de transformar el sistema global que está impulsando estas crisis. Democratizar la toma de decisiones económicas y permitir que el sur global tenga más voz y participación es esencial para satisfacer las necesidades de las comunidades más pobres y afectadas".
“Hemos venido a Sevilla para decir: basta”, afirmó Andrew Nazdin del Glasgow Actions Team. “Necesitamos alivio de la deuda, una convención fiscal de la ONU y normas económicas mundiales que trabajen para que prospere la mayoría, no una minoría”.
"En palabras de un gran miembro de la diáspora africana, la modernidad ha hecho del mundo un vecindario, pero aún no una hermandad", dijo Iskander Erzini Vernoit, Director de la Iniciativa IMAL para Clima y Desarrollo.
La organización de defensa del Vaticano apoyó estos mensajes con un mural realizado en vivo en pleno centro de Sevilla que exigía una solución a la injusticia de la deuda.
Los defensores de la campaña reclaman pasos urgentes para eliminar las cargas de deuda ilegítimas, crear un marco de resolución de deuda con base en Naciones Unidas y frenar la influencia de países e instituciones poderosas que siguen ejerciendo dominio económico sobre el Sur Global.
