Belém, Brazil — Today, on the eve of the second week of COP30, activists from a cross-constituency coalition transformed areas in Belém into a call to action for a just transition.

At an iconic river fort outside COP30, activists displayed a large-scale laser projection introducing and calling for the Belem Action Mechanism (“BAM!”). BAM! is a proposed COP30 mechanism to operationalize a Global Just Transition by bringing together finance, technology, knowledge sharing, and community participation so countries, workers, and frontline communities can move from promises to implementation.

“The world is in trouble. Without immediate action, workers, communities, entire countries will stay behind and climate action will stall. They need the international community to better deliver support and guidance so they can achieve a Just Transition,” stated Ayshka Najib, Women and Gender Constituency.

“Workers and their communities are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis across the world, and they are often sidelined when decisions are taken. To achieve a Just Transition, we need concrete action with real participation by civil society, including unions,” stated Giulia Laganà, ITUC.

The action follows Saturday’s Global Day of Action, launched by social and environmental movements across the world in parallel with COP30. From cities across Latin America and Africa to communities in Europe and Asia, people marched in solidarity with Amazonian peoples and frontline communities everywhere.
